'Not That Kind of Girl' Review

Hi girls and guys,

I wish I was many things, as do we all. One thing I wish I could be is a bookworm. I was as a child but growing up, I've really struggled to keep my head in a book, until recently.

For Christmas last gone, one of my dear friends bought me a copy of Lena Dunham's début book, 'Not That Kind of Girl'. As a huge fan of Lena's work, i.e. 'Tiny Furniture' and of course HBO's 'Girls', I was extremely excited to get my head stuck into her book, and I was blown away with how brilliant it is.

Like her character Hannah, in 'Girls' tells her parents, she thinks she's "the voice of our generation - or at least, a voice." and when reading this book, whether your a City Kid like she was, or a girl from Sussex just entering her twenties (hint hint!) this book has essays that really do speak to its audience with relation as well as humour and awe.

Lena isn't afraid to be controversial and discusses taboo subjects in realistic detail, this shows pretty well in 'Girls', therefore this book should have an age restriction for around 16+. This book dives straight in sex and relationships, with chapters named 'Take my Virginity! (No, Really Take it!)' which suggests that Dunham isn't going to beat around the bush with essays and topics she wants to talk about.

The style in which Dunham writes has a certain raw honesty about it which immediately attracted me to it. Although the media tarnishes Dunham with this precocious, hipster, spoilt personality, this book is a clear example she isn't that at all and in fact just a woman with the same insecurities and quirks that girls have all over the world, but that media doesn't like to give us justice for.

Lena writes in a way you feel like you're just listening to a friend, or sisters embarrasing story, or a story with a lesson to learn, and after reading it, as a reader you feel much closer to this amazing, truthful woman, that girls in particular should pay more attention to.

The book is available in bookstores and Urban Outfitters as well as kindle edition too!
