So this summer has been one long, wet, cold English Summer which meant I should have had time to blog, but alas, I haven't, sorry. But, I've decided to at least start doing favourites, if anything to realise what I've really actually loved and used, from what I really haven't. I'm going to make it quite miscellaneous with the categories because I'm not one to pigeon-hole this blog as a beauty, media, fashion or music blog. It's a bit of everything, therefore my monthly favourites will be too!
So here's a bit of what I've been loving last month!
Book
'The Drowning of Arthur Braxton' by Caroline Smailes
Thanks to youtube and director Luke Cutforth, I became interested in this book after I watched his kickstarter plea to help fund his film adaptation of this book. Studying the degree I am, I'm always interested how people can picture a film version of a book from reading it, and how they will approach it compared to your own imagination of it from the text.
So I decided to read it and I am so glad I did. I haven't finished it yet but have been completely gripped with the free time I've had to read it! It's a strange and mythical love story (i think?!) of a boy who's being bullied at school and having a crap ol' life and escapes to some old shut down healing baths in his North Wales town. There he meets some compelling and quirky characters which you as a reader luckily get to see the perspectives of in different chapters. The chapters are split into different characters and are voiced in opposing ways. Arthur as an adolescent male, can't get enough of swearing and does what many young boys do and thinks pretty much with his genitals. Delphina's chapters contrast with script text and are much more tragic and mythical. It's such a hard book to describe and yet one that so many people should read. I'm nearly there with finishing and will do a full review once done but for pennies on Kindle, please read this book!
Music
'Automatic' by Don Broco
Being a teenager in the 00's decade, you were either emo's/rockers or chavs in my school. It was simple. Following my brothers footsteps, I proudly took the emo/rock side. Not having listened to Paramore and Fall Out Boy for many years as religiously as I had done then, recently I'm returning to the rock genre in my music choice.
Don Broco have been a firm fave on my spotify playlists this summer with their new album 'Automatic' containing pop/rock/indie tunes that are so catchy! The lead's deep, velvety voice with singalong chorus' of 'Fire' and album opener 'Superlove' have just hooked me all August. If you're a fan of Paramore, You Me at Six and late Kids in Glass Houses (as I was) I really recommend listening if Radio 1 hasn't made you already.
'Peanut Butter Jelly' by Galantis
This is a quick commendation on this summer anthem! It's an upbeat and well, happy song that has basically been the theme to my summer. From driving along the M25, a road trip to Portsmouth or a night on the town, this song has been there. I thank one of my best friends Chloe for getting me into it, and everytime I hear it now, it's going to have a strong nostalgic feel, but will certainly put a smile on my face.
Film
'Big Hero 6'
So I got to catsit this summer while my Uncle and his husband went on their honeymoon and let me tell you, this means one thing: movie marathon! He owns pretty much every film (especially disney) you could imagine and after being thoroughly disappointed with 'Inside Out' I couldn't wait to watch a good disney film again to restore my faith. 'Big Hero 6' was the pick of the bunch and oh my word, I've not stopped watching it since. It's the cutest and coolest disney film there's been in a while. Set in the fictional city San Fransokyo, it's a real mixture of east and west about how a healthcare assistant robot and a young teenage boy, Hero become close friends after a tragic accident and save the city! It's a film that celebrates cleverness and achieving high as well as multiculturalism. And also Baymax is THE cutest robot ever.
Television
'Catfish: The TV Show'
If you're in the age gap of 15-25 and you have sky or cable, chances are you've heard of this show. Although I've caught episodes whenever I can, I haven't watched it religiously until this summer. The show's premise is a documentary series where two presenters Nev and Max, (Nev being through this situation before as seen in 'Catfish' the movie). They help young people who write in, meet the person whom they have been talking online to, in real life. It doesn't sound like much but the people behind the profiles are not always who they seem to be and that does get real juicy. It's interesting to see why people do this and is also a reality shock to think a bit more carefully when online, as Facebook or twitter these days are not always filled with honest people. But, it's easy watching and so addictive. I don't know what I'm going to do come autumn when I lose my sky for 3 months.
Clothing
Topshop has come out trumps yet again! My friend treated me to this dress pictured for my 21st birthday night out, and I got so many compliments. On the hanger it doesn't look the greatest shape, but its comfortable, floaty fabric lets it hang in all the right places. They had it in an array of colours and what I loved is it's something you can dress up and down. The high necks are so in fashion right now and never feels too tight. And guess what! They're £20! That's it! So I bought it in black, as I actually never owned an LBD and I've worn it to death this summer when going out. I feel so classy yet comfortable in it and may possibly buy it in another colour before they go!
Make Up
Kate Moss Nude Collection
Lipstick is always something I've tried to incorporate into my make-up routine but on many occasions failed. That's until I found out about Kate Moss' nude collection of her Rimmel lipsticks. Now I own a few of the other shades from the regular Kate Moss collection and love the colour and the texture. For £5 a lipstick they're so smooth and have a lot of moisture in them which I love as I suffer with dry lips. But these both hardly ever need re-applying and hold their colour for many hours. Now one is not from the nude collection specifically but as you can see they're both in the nude shades, and in fact I've been loving the darker one in particular as its almost a smoky pink colour which looks stunning.
The black packaged one is: 08
The pink packaged one is: 45
That's it for this post, I hope you lot have enjoyed it and hopefully if my work load from uni this term isn't too unbearable, these may become a regular post!
