Catfish and the Bottlemen, Cardiff 29.10.15

It's Hallowe'en week in the student central of Cardiff, but for one night, it felt like the entirety of the 16-25 year old population were in the queue for indie-rock band, Catfish and The Bottlemen.

Since the release of 'Kathleen', Catfish have caught my eye and brought out tune after tune after tune. So when they announced a Cardiff date, back in May, I HAD to catch the Llandudno lads.

Their tour has completely sold out and I completely understand why. The anticipation built huge amounts from the moment I was in the Great Hall. The audience waited a patient hour and a half until The London Souls graced the stage with pure groove. You couldn't deny they were fantastic musicians, playing funky, soul rock between vocals, harmonies, drums and a guitar. I felt personally that they didn't have much conversing with the crowd and realised the long set they performed was being lost out on us because many audience members disengaged. It was a slight let down if I'm honest which was gutting as you could tell they really knew their instruments.

A quick half hour went by and anticipation grew when the 'Bottlemen boys kept teasing us by appearing out the green room door.

They exploded onto the stage with 'Rango' and the whole crowd joined in as soon as it kicked in. Now I've been to many a concert and this gig stood out as a special one because to every song bar new one, '7', the crowd sang along to every. single. word. Lead, Van Mccann seemed blown away with the crowd, thanking us at every opportunity.

We were...lucky? to have a unique experience due to Cardiff Students Union's lights failing. In which the boys were assisted off stage half an hour into the set. An annoyed Mccann came to the barrier to apologise to us, and he was genuinely apologetic even though it really wasn't their fault.

After ten minutes he exclaimed "just forget the lights, lets just play" which we were all grateful for. He then performed a solo version of 'Hourglass' in which the audience sang along in moral support. That wasn't one of my favourite songs, admittedly but I feel like it's given a new memory for me for this song, now resulting to constant listening.

I was so chuffed to see Catfish and the Bottlemen after playing 'Balcony' non-stop for 2014/2015 and urge you to go see these talented, likeable boys when they play near you.

See you soon,

Sophie
